Shoushan Monkeys

Taiwanese macaque (Macaca cyclopis)

With no enough time to go up the mountain of Shoushan, my Taiwanese friend just took me to the side of the Shousan National Natural Park to see some of the Taiwanese macaques. Shousan or commonly known as the Monkey Mountain is a mountain at the Gushan District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It was named as such because of the monkeys living on the mountain, particularly tge Taiwanese macaques.

Only endemic in Taiwan, the Taiwanese macaques or Formosan rock macaques (Macaca cyclopis) are the only native primates living in the island. One family usually consists of an average of 45 individuals. Unfortunately, the species is considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting. They were hunted down because of the damage they were causing to agricultural crops and their use in experimental evaluation of new drugs.
