National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Valenzuela City

The National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima is a church and national shrine under the Diocese of Malolos. It serves as the Philippine apostolate of Our Lady of Fatima, whose devotion originated in Fátima, Portugal and is formally recognized by the Catholic Church in the Philippines.

The spread of devotion to Our Lady of Fatima in the country gained momentum forty-three years after the original apparitions, particularly with the establishment of the first Philippine chapter of the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima, now the World Apostolate of Fatima, in Mangaldan, Pangasinan in 1961. This period coincided with significant local changes in the town of Polo, Bulacan. On July 21, 1960, Polo was divided through an executive order signed by President Carlos P. Garcia, leading to the creation of the municipality of Valenzuela City, composed of ten former barrios including Karuhatan, Marulas, Malinta, and others.

With the establishment of the new municipality, the distance to the old parish church became a practical concern for many residents. The historic San Diego de Alcala Church, built by Franciscan friars in 1629, was no longer easily accessible to the growing community of Valenzuela. This situation led to a shared desire among the faithful for a parish church within their own town.

On February 7, 1965, Malolos Bishop blessed and laid the cornerstone of what would become the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. Construction progressed gradually over the following years, marked by limited resources and steady community support. After more than a decade of careful and sustained work, the church structure was completed in 1977.

Even before construction was fully finished, the importance of the shrine was formally recognized. On June 12, 1976, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines declared the parish a National Shrine. Following this declaration, the image of Our Lady of Fatima, originally enshrined at the GAMI Chapel, was solemnly crowned on March 6, 1977.
