Pan de Amerikana, Upside Down

The upside down facade of Pan de Amerikana in Katipunan Ave.

It was in 2011 when I first visited Pan de Amerikana along Katipunan Ave. The restaurant caught my attention after being featured on a television show. The building resembles an upside-down house. Initially, the restaurant started as a panaderia known for its pandesal. Over time, it evolved into a more carinderia-style restaurant rather than a lavish one.

At the facade of the restaurant, there used to be a car and a bicycle hanging upside down, with tables, chairs, and a black piano affixed to the ceiling inside. However, not all of these elements have been maintained in the current appearance of the shop. When I revisited the restaurant after 11 years, I was disappointed to find that only the car outside and a repainted red piano were left hanging upside down. This change could be attributed to the effects of the prolonged lockdown due to the pandemic.

The restaurant now resembles a forest, with extensive decorations of fake trees and vines inside. Unfortunately, it seems to have lost its novelty. I hope the owners will recognize this and consider revitalizing the restaurant.

UPDATE: The Pan de Amerikana in Katipunan has closed down permanently last June 30, 2023.
