In the busy area of Guadalupe Nuevo, Makati City, known for its large billboards and its location near San Carlos Seminary, stands a simple but important church, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Celestial Patroness of the Philippines. The place was once known for its large urban poor population, and out of concern for the people living there, a parish was established in 1951.

This church is often mistaken for the Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church, which is also located in the Guadalupe area of Makati. While both are dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is found in Guadalupe Nuevo, while Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church is in Guadalupe Viejo. Each has its own distinct history and devotion, but both continue to serve as important spiritual centers for the faithful.

Over time, devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe grew stronger. The parish became a well-loved spiritual home, drawing many people to attend Masses and Marian celebrations. Because of this growing devotion, it was later recognized as an archdiocesan shrine, a place where pilgrims could come to honor the Blessed Virgin.

As more devotees visited and expressed their faith, the community hoped for higher recognition. In 2010, the church was officially declared the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, marking an important moment in its history. The declaration took place on May 31, during the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
