San Juan Dela Cruz Church in Ugong

San Juan Dela Cruz Church in Valenzuela City

Despite its appearance resembling an old church, the San Juan Dela Cruz Parish is actually a relatively recent establishment, having been founded in 1996. The church is under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Malolos and can be found in Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela City. The barangay got its name from the powerful flow and deep rumbling sound of its creek. There is a local belief that the loud rumbling noise heard at night is caused by Spanish cavaliers.

The parish derived its name from St. John of the Cross, a renowned figure known for his literary contributions. He received guidance and maintained correspondence with the elder Carmelite, Teresa of Ávila. His poetry and extensive studies on the progression of the soul are regarded as the pinnacle of mystical Spanish literature and rank among the most significant works in Spanish literary history. Pope Benedict XIII canonized him in 1726, and he was further honored in 1926 when Pope Pius XI proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church, earning him the title of the “mystical doctor.”
