Lake Naujan is a freshwater lake located in the province of Occidental Mindoro in the Philippines. It is one of the largest lakes in the country and is known for its rich biodiversity. One of the most popular fish species found in Lake Naujan is the ayungin, also known as silver perch (Leiopotherapon plumbeus).

Ayungin is a small freshwater fish that is commonly found in rivers and lakes in the Philippines. It is a popular fish among locals and is often used in traditional Filipino dishes such as sinigang and paksiw. However, the ayungin caught in Lake Naujan is particularly special.

The ayungin caught in Lake Naujan is known for its unique taste and texture. The fish is said to be sweeter and more flavorful compared to ayungin caught in other bodies of water. This is because Lake Naujan is surrounded by lush forests and is fed by several rivers, which provide the fish with a rich source of nutrients.

When we went to Socorro for a snail sampling, we have noticed that the local residents were preparing the fish for sun drying. What caught my attention is the beautiful pattern of placing the ayungin on the drying net. It is very art-like.

We actually bought several kilos of the dried ayungin as ‘pasalubong’ and for self-consumption. So if you ever find yourself in Occidental Mindoro, be sure to try some of the delicious ayungin caught in Lake Naujan!
