Royal Regalia Museum

Royal Regalia Museum

During our tour of Brunei, we visited the Royal Regalia Museum, conveniently located in the city center and easily recognizable by its prominent white and silver dome. Similar to Brunei’s grand national mosques, the museum’s interior boasts imported marble. Originally constructed by Sultan Saifuddien, the building was initially named the “Churchill Memorial Building” after the former UK Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill.

Upon entering the museum, visitors are welcomed by a magnificent, gilded chariot. This chariot, crafted for the 1992 Silver Jubilee ceremony, continues to be utilized by the royal family during national celebrations. Positioned adjacent to it is the original chariot employed during Sultan Bolkiah’s coronation in 1968, along with gold and silver ceremonial armour.

The term “regalia” pertains to the awards and royal garments, which the museum displays. This includes a range of Royal Regalia items from His Majesty’s childhood to his coronation, such as jewel-encrusted crowns, thrones, garments, and his revered silver Keris (dagger). Additionally, the museum exhibits gifts presented to Sultan Bolkiah by foreign leaders and heads of state.
