Due to its small size, we opted to explore Seria town in Brunei’s Belait District. Seria holds historical significance as the site where oil was first discovered in Brunei back in 1929, subsequently evolving into a hub for the nation’s oil and gas industry. This pivotal moment marked a significant turning point in Brunei’s economic trajectory. The discovery of oil and natural gas not only bolstered the country’s political, financial, and cultural landscapes but also prompted amendments to the 1959 Constitution, leading to the abolition of the Resident System and laying the groundwork for Brunei’s eventual independence from Britain.
Here are the places we visited in Seria:
Billionth Barrel Monument

Named in honor of the billionth barrel of crude oil extracted from the Seria field, this monument was commissioned by the Brunei Shell Petroleum Company in 1991. Positioned near the location of Brunei’s initial oil discovery in 1929, the monument features six arches converging at the summit, symbolizing the journey of oil from below the earth’s surface to its extraction, spanning decades of exploration and production leading up to the milestone. At the pinnacle of the monument rests the national emblem of Brunei, signifying the prosperity and unity of the nation and its citizens.
Seria Beach

Since Seria lies along the South China Sea coast, there is a beach in Brunei as well. However, it appeared deserted, indicating that it may no longer be frequented by visitors.
Seria Energy Lab

Regrettably, when we visited, the Seria Energy Lab was closed for renovations. Previously known as the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre, it was established in 2002 and offers a variety of exhibitions focused on energy-related topics.
Pekan Seria Mosque

The Seria Mosque stands as the oldest surviving mosque in Brunei, constructed in the year 1954.
