Visiting Vientiane

Welcome to Vientiane, Lao PDR

When my former Japanese professor informed me that our meeting would take place in Lao PDR, I was thrilled. It will be my first visit to Laos, completing my journey across all Southeast Asian countries. Since there’s no direct flight from Manila to Vientiane, I have a long layover in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Laos at Nam Phou Park

Our flight to Vientiane with Vietnam Airlines was unusual. On the way, the plane stopped at an airport in Cambodia for 45 minutes. It was to drop off and pick up passengers. Once we arrived in Vientiane, the plane continued on to Hanoi as its final destination. It felt more like traveling on a bus or train with multiple stops along the route.

A major street in Vientiane

Vientiane is the capital and largest city of Laos. Its charm is more like that of a rural city in the Philippines, especially compared to major Philippine cities. It is situated along the banks of the Mekong River, right at the border with Thailand.

From Vientiane, you can catch a glimpse of the Mekong River, with Thailand just across the water.

Vientiane feels like a rural city by some standards. But, its simplicity and cultural significance make it a destination worth exploring. It’s ideal for those seeking a peaceful yet enriching Southeast Asian experience.
