Northern Luzon is home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes and iconic landmarks in the Philippines. Among these are two engineering marvels. They not only captivate the eyes but also reflect the ingenuity and sustainable vision of the region: the Patapat Viaduct and the Bangui Windmills. We had a chance to see them a day before our Visita Iglesia in Ilocos. So if you’re planning a road trip to Ilocos Norte, these two stops should be at the top of your list.
Patapat Viaduct: Where the Mountains Meet the Sea

Location: Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte
Length: 1.3 kilometers
Completed: 1986
The Patapat Viaduct is a coastal highway bridge. It clings gracefully to the mountainside. It connects the Maharlika Highway to the northernmost part of Luzon. It is suspended 31 meters above sea level. The bridge winds along the lush foothills of the Cordillera mountain range. It offers sweeping views of the crystal-clear Pasaleng Bay.
Why It’s a Must-See:
- Scenic Views: The viaduct offers a panoramic vista of sea, sky, and mountain. It is a favorite for photographers and road-trippers alike.
- Engineering Feat: The viaduct was built to prevent landslides. These landslides earlier plagued the region. The structure is a testament to both form and purpose.
- Peaceful Vibes: With fewer crowds, you can enjoy only the sound of waves and the wind. It’s a perfect stop for a quiet, reflective moment. It’s also ideal for a breezy photoshoot.

Bangui Windmills: A Giant Leap for Green Energy

Location: Bangui Bay, Ilocos Norte
Turbines: 20 wind turbines (initial phase), each 70 meters tall
Commissioned: 2005 (Phase I)
About an hour’s drive south of Patapat lies the town of Bangui. A line of towering wind turbines stands guard along the crescent-shaped coastline of Bangui Bay. These are the Bangui Windmills — the first power-generating wind farm in Southeast Asia.
Why It’s a Must-See:
- Sustainable Power: The windmills contribute to clean energy generation and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
- Majestic Landscape: The turbines stand like sentinels along the shore. They offer a striking contrast to the rolling waves. The scenery blends with the azure skies.
- Instagram-Worthy: The Bangui Windmills are one of the most photographed landmarks in Ilocos, especially during sunrise and golden hour.
