Chavit Singson’s Baluarte in Vigan

Freely roaming deers in Baluarte

Located just outside the historic center of Vigan, Baluarte remains one of the city’s most well-known attractions. On my second visit there, I already had an idea of what to expect, but it was still interesting to see how the place has grown and changed over time.

The day of my visit was very hot, with the sun bearing down early in the morning. Fortunately, Baluarte offers a shuttle service for an extra fee, which turned out to be a helpful way to get around the wide and open grounds without walking too much under the sun.

Ostriches

The place is known primarily for its zoological park, which houses a range of animals like ostriches, camels, zebras, ponies, and deer, as well as birds, reptiles, and big cats like lions and tigers. Some of the animals are kept in enclosures, while others roam in more open areas or are featured in scheduled animal shows. The Butterfly Garden and Reptile House are also part of the experience.

One notable feature is the Safari Gallery, an indoor exhibit filled with preserved animals and hunting trophies from various countries. Though not for everyone, it provides a glimpse into the personal collection of Chavit Singson, the property’s owner, and adds a museum-like aspect to the visit.

The grounds are expansive, with a mix of shaded walking paths, picnic spots, and wide areas where visitors can rest and take in the view. There are souvenir shops, snack stands, and areas where guests can rent e-karts or bicycles to get around more easily. The view from the upper part of the property also gives a nice overlook of the nearby landscape, with the sea visible in the distance on a clear day.
