Saint-Louis is actually a commune in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace in north-eastern France. I really don’t have time to visit any place in France. But on the day of my flight back to Japan via Frankfurt, I decided to have a short walk from my hotel about 2 hours before going to the airport.

Bits & Pieces: Who is Albrecht von Haller?
During my walking tour around Bern, Switzerland, I ran into a statue in front of the University of Bern. It was a statue of Swiss anatomist, physiologist, naturalist, encyclopedist, bibliographer and poet, Albrecht von Haller.
Das Wunder von Bern
Bern is famous for its quaint old city which was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Bern used to be a medieval city center built on a narrow hill surrounded by the river Aare whose compact layout has remained unchanged since its construction during the 12th to the 15th century.
The Ebola Station At Universitätspital Basel
The Ebola epidemic in 2014 is the largest in history affecting the West Africa. Different countries in the world get ready by having well-equipped facilities to handle ebola cases. For Switzerland, the government requires each canton to have one ebola station. This means that there are 26 Ebola stations all throughout Switzerland. For the canton of Basel-Stadt, it is located at the Universitätspital Basel (University of Basel Hospital). It was therefore a privilege for me to visit this ebola station.
Going Around Switzerland by Schweizerische Bundesbahnen
Switzerland has proven to be one of the countries with the easiest and most proficient way of moving around the country through their network of trains. Their national railway company is called Swiss Federal Railways which is usually referred to by the initials of its German, French and Italian names SBB (German: Schweizerische Bundesbahnen), CFF (French: Chemins de fer fédéraux suisses) and FFS (Italian: Ferrovie federali svizzere).
Ziel Basel
Moving around Basel is easy as there are trams connecting different points of the city. During my stay in Basel for the conference, I always purchased the 1-day pass so it will be more economical to tour the city whenever I wanted. The network of the tramway is already more than a century old and has became part of Basel’s heritage.
Guten Morgen Frankfurt!
I started my walking tour early the next day since I have to catch my flight to Basel in the afternoon. My first destination was the Römerberg, which is a part of the Alstadt (Old Town). Along the way, I passed the Paulsplatz (St. Paul Square) where the St. Paul’s Church stood. Paulsplatz is the largest square in the old town of Frankfurt am Main which is connected to the south with the Römerberg square.
Knowing Goethe
I just knew a little about the German writer and politician Johann Wolfgang von Goethe from my literature class in high school. I have just read a part of his most relevant work, Faust. It is a retelling of a classic German legend about a dissatisfied intellectual man who made a pact with the Devil exchanging his soul with unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures.
