Funny Signs Around Me

Japan is known for beautiful scenery and amazing technology. But it is also known for its Engrish, the wrong use of the English language in some East Asian countries. The term Engrish was coined for the Japanese people’s tendency of speaking the letter “R” instead of the letter “L”. However, Engrish goes beyond that. Poor translations of Japanese sentences and strange signages can be seen everywhere in Japan and are usually spread on the internet.

When Seasons Went Identity Crisis

This must be the ugliest time of the year. From the blackening ice-solid snow mixed with dust to the obvious cracks on the roads brought by harsh temperature changes, the transition from winter to spring might be the most, if not the only unappealing period every year here in Hokkaido.

When Hachiko Met Hidesaburo

The reunion statue of Dr. Hidesaburo Ueno and Hachiko was constructed last year inside the University of Tokyo to celebrate the 90th and 80th death anniversary of Dr. Ueno and Hachiko respectively. And during our meeting last Friday, I had the chance of seeing the statue. In contrast to the lone, sad presence of Hachiko in Shibuya, the reunion statue has immortalized the happy moment everytime Hachiko meets his master Hidesaburo.

The Ethereal Blue Pond

The Blue Pond or Aoiike is an artificial pond created brought by the eruption of the nearby volcano Mt. Tokachi in 1988. The government decided to construct a dam on Biei River to protect the region from mudflows if ever the volcano erupts again. The accumulation of the water blocked by the dam in the forest lead to the formation of the blue pond.
