Palacio De Correos De Mexico

So far, it’s the most beautiful post office that I’ve ever seen in person. Mexico City’s Palacio de Correos de Mexico (Postal Palace of Mexico City) is also known as the “Correo Mayor” (Main Post Office) and Quinta Casa de Correos (Fifth House of Mail) since it was the fifth post office in Mexico City. The building was designed by the architect Adam Boari who also did the Palacio de Bellas Artes. Located in the historic center of Mexico City, the building was constructed for 5 years starting 1902 until it was finally inaugurated in 1907.

The architectural style of the Postal Palace is very much eclectic, a mixture of Art Nouveau, Rococo, Gothic, Neoclassical, Baroque and Art Deco among others. The gray chiluca stone gave the building its beige color. The exteriors are with baroque columns and decorative details such as the intricately carved filigree surrounding the windows.

The most conspicuous and impressive element inside the building is its monumental staircase. Its bronze railings were actually cast in Florence, Italy. Aside from the classy staircase, the ornate elevator is also fancy and seems like a magical time machine that will take its passengers back in time.

The building was heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1985. It was fully restored in 1990 with its original appearance. The building’s steel frame and a foundation built on a massive grid of steel beams have made it stronger to withstand earthquakes.

There was also a small Postal Museum located on the 1st floor. Here, there are many memorabilia about Mexico’s postal system including the first stamp ever issued in Mexico.
