Once we arrived in Burauen, Leyte, a beautiful church got my attention. Founded in 1600 by the Jesuits, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Burauen stands as one of the most ancient churches in the region. Following the expulsion of the Society of Jesus from the Philippines and other Spanish territories, the administration of the parish was assumed by the Augustinian fathers. In the mid-1800s, the management of the parish was subsequently entrusted to the Franciscans, as the Augustinians stepped aside.

At first, the Church of Burauen underwent modifications with the addition of a humble retablo on its altar. Nevertheless, when Typhoon Yolanda made landfall, the roof sustained significant damage. The destructive force of the typhoon caused extensive destruction to the once picturesque blue and white church.

Following that, a comprehensive plan was developed to rebuild the church on a more expansive and elevated level. Presently, the church is undergoing a magnificent transformation into a breathtaking structure, enhanced by numerous spires. The roofing has been successfully finished, showcasing two rows of spires reminiscent of the architectural style found in Milan. This ambitious undertaking has been made achievable through the kind and generous contributions of devoted parishioners and supporters from abroad.

In honor of the 500th anniversary of Christianity in the Philippines, the church has been bestowed with the esteemed title of a Jubilee Church. This prestigious designation was personally granted by none other than Pope Francis.
