Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera lived in the blue house as a couple from 1929 to 1954.I was introduced to one of the most prominent Mexican artists, Frida Kahlo in the 2002 Salma Hayek movie. And when I went to Mexico City, I had a chance to visit La Casa Azul (Blue House) in Coyoacán where Kahlo spent her lifetime since her birth in 1907.
Rotating blocks at the museum showing the clothes worn by Frida.Frida got married to another Mexican art icon Diego Rivera and they lived in the same house from 1929 until Frida died in 1954. Diego eventually died in 1957 and the La Casa Azul has served as Museo Frida Kahlo since 1958.
La Casa AsulThe museum now housed the couple’s collection of artworks, Mexican folk art, pre-Hispanic artifacts, photographs, memorabilia and personal items. There are just few original paintings of Frida though. But the fact that Frida spent most of her lifetime in the blue house and there are many important personal items belonging to her being shown at the museum, the visit is still a must. The place is actually a popular tourist spot as proven by the long line of people who wanted to enter the museum when I went there. It was also a part of a paid tour going to Xochimilco so I had a limited time inside the museum.
Displays outside the blue house. The exteriors of the blue house is with giant papier-mâché decorations such as skeletons. There are a total of ten rooms in the museum. I cannot take pictures inside the museum since they don’t allow it. The most memorable room for me was her bedroom. Near her bed is a photo montage of socialist icons Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and Mao Zedong. This clearly showed her flirtations with socialism.
