Lifers at La Mesa Dam

White-breasted waterhen

Labor Day at La Mesa Dam was calm and unhurried, with steady bird activity along the trail. We noted a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron near the water, a brief sighting of an White-breasted waterhen, and a Black-naped Oriole moving through the canopy, but the morning was defined by two lifers, the Philippine Bulbul and the Asian Koel.

Philippine Bilbul (Hypsipetes philippinus)

The Philippine Bulbul was observed perched in the open, showing its typical brown upperparts, slightly paler underparts, and a small crest. It moved between branches with short hops and remained visible for several minutes. The call consisted of clear, whistling notes that carried across the area. The species appeared comfortable in the disturbed forest edge, consistent with its known adaptability in lowland habitats.

Asian Koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus)

The Asian Koel was first detected by its loud, repetitive call. The individual observed was a male, identifiable by its glossy black plumage, red eye, and pale greenish grey bill. It remained in the canopy, moving slowly along branches with deliberate steps. The long tail was noticeable during movement. No female was observed during this sighting.

Black-naped Oriole

These two species were the main highlights of the trip. The bulbul was easier to observe and remained in view longer, while the koel required locating by sound before it was seen.
