I visited the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Peñafrancia in Naga City, Camarines Sur, which serves as the main center of devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia in the Bicol Region. The basilica is located across the river from the older shrine, which was the original site of the devotion.

The devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia traces its origin to Spain, where the image was first associated with a Marian shrine in Peña de Francia. It was introduced to the Philippines in the early 18th century by Miguel Robles de Covarrubias. A chapel was initially built along the Bicol River in 1711, and a larger church followed in 1741. This structure is now referred to as the old shrine.

Due to the increasing number of devotees, a larger church was constructed. The current basilica was completed in 1981 and later designated as a minor basilica and national shrine. Compared to older Spanish-era churches in the region, the structure is modern, with a wide nave designed to accommodate large gatherings.
